A QUIET REVOLUTION by YOKO ONO
SPEECH FOR OXFORD UNIVERSITY ON MARCH 10, 2010
A butterfly is hopping from flower to flower. Oh, good. I think. The butterfly is busybodying as usual. Peace reins. But what is the butterfly really doing?
When a tiny movement like the flapping of the wings of a butterfly brings about a big [...]
Karuizawa is an old summer resort in Japan very much like the Hamptons except it’s in the mountains. There is a coffee house in a pine forest near Karuizawa. John & I fell in love with the place, and found ourselves going there almost every day with Sean. To get there, you had to go cycling for about 30 minutes from the town of Karuizawa. But we loved going there. There was a big hammock in the backyard, and John, Sean and I used to spend the afternoon lying in it, giggling, singing, and watching the sky…
Many people believe that in this age, art is dead. They despise the artists who show in galleries and are caught up in the traditional art world. Artists themselves are beginning to lose their confidence. They don’t know whether they are doing something that still has value in this day and age where the social problems are so vital and critical. I wondered myself about this. Why am I still an artist? And why am I not joining the violent revolutionaries? Then I realized that destruction is not my game. Violent revolutionaries are trying to destroy the establishment. That is good. But how? By killing? Killing is such an artless thing….
The Other Rooms is a sequel to Yoko Ono’s Grapefruit, a now classic artist’s book that was first published in 1964 and became a cult classic following its wider distribution after 1970.
Matching the satisfyingly compact size of Grapefruit, and beautifully bound in white cloth, The Other Rooms is conceived as a series of rooms that unfold the story of, in the words of the artist, “the life of a woman seeing through the eyes of her son.”
THANKSGIVING MESSAGE
by Yoko Ono
Dear Friends,
John and I, the new members of the new found land, so to speak, loved celebrating Thanksgiving.
To Sean, Daddy John told the story of how the American Indians taught us to make Turkey dinner with cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie… well, the pie may have been inspired by the original English [...]
I met Stefan Wolpe in the late 50’s when he lived in his upper Westside apartment with Hilda, his beautiful partner. Stefan and Hilda often invited me to their home for tea. (I was also invited for dinners, too, but there, I must say, Hilda was not a very professional cook!) I loved the intellectual, [...]
NYLON Magazine recently asked people to write about an experience they have had in America.
This was one of mine…

One beautiful spring, sometime in the ’70s, John and I decided to go cross-country from New York to the Gold Coast (as we called San Francisco). We kept driving on the straightest road that went on [...]
25 Things Even My Best Friends Didn’t Know Until Now
by Yoko Ono
From the Bottom Up:
1. I like to wiggle my toes when I’m waiting for something – like in the
waiting room of my dentist. It makes me less nervous.
2. I like to be barefoot as much as possible. Places I’m definitely
barefoot are: a) at home b) [...]
AFFIRMATION FOR PLANET PEACE
by Yoko Ono
Thank you, thank you, thank you
Our planet is healthy and whole
Every part of the planet is revitalized and healed.
We, the people of Earth
See clearly, Hear clearly, Think clearly.
Express and communicate our thoughts clearly
Spiritually, mentally, and physically.
For the benefit of ours and other planets’
We make the right judgement, right decision, right [...]
SMILING FACE FILM by Yoko Ono
My ultimate goal in film-making is to make a film which includes a smiling face snap of every single human being in the world. Of course, I cannot go around the whole world and take the shots myself. I need cooperation from something like the post offices of the world. [...]
I’LL BE BACK by yoko ono, June ‘09
I was walking into the Futurism exhibition at Tate Modern, the last day of my stay in London. Suddenly the Manifesto of Futurism hit my eyes.
1. We intend to sing the love of danger, the habit of energy and fearlessness
2. Courage, audacity, and revolt will be essential elements of [...]

DISC 1: LONDON JAM
This disc represents ‘68 to ‘71.
It’s the Ascot London – Briefly Visiting New York Period.
At the time, I was an avant-garde composer obsessed with the sound of
music in my head and in no one else’s. In the avant-garde, I jammed with
top musicians like John Cage, David Tudor and La Monte Young in [...]
A SIMPLE ARITHMETIC by yoko ono ‘09
The economic shock woke us all up.
Now we have to get off our high horse, and become real.
So let me present you with a simple arithmetic.
When two people separate in bad faith, they don’t just become two separate energies.
A negative energy of anger, disappointment and fear is added to [...]
Cool and Sweet Dessert
Gather all your favorite fruits of the season.
Make a fruit soup out of them.
Freeze it in the freezer for the night, until it becomes icecubes.
Cut the ice cubes and serve it with maple syrup and cinnamon.
Make sure to chant an affirmation that this sweet desert will bring peace and love to the [...]
How would you describe the current stage in your artistic practice?
What’s the relationship between art and life?
My life is art. Art is my life.
Any hobby besides art?
Do you treat art practice as your work?
All that entails in life is my hobby.
How would you describe change in your practice from early years till today?
Is there [...]
On New Year’s Eve 2008, a MySpace friend wrote to me
and asked: “What can I do to help the Peace Movement?”
This was my reply:
Dear Jake
This is an age where one hero cannot conquer Evil.
Evil is a dis-ease presented to us as our fate.
Many times, it is presented to us as an illusion of goodness
- so [...]

The Iceland Post Company recently published a book on Yoko Ono’s
IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in cooperation with the artist. The tower was
erected on Reykjavík’s Viðey island on October 9, 2007, in the memory
of her late husband John Lennon.
The 100-page book, simply entitled IMAGINE PEACE TOWER, contains a
wealth of information on Ono’s project.
In the book, the artist [...]
Hi, my friends!
Now, I’m in Tokyo for the annual Dream Power Concert. The top Japanese rockers play and sing John’s songs each year. All the proceeds of the concert go to building schools in Africa and Asia. Mainly in Africa. This is the eighth year of this concert, and, in seven years, we have built [...]
