Yoko Ono announces today, February 1st, 2009, the presentation of the first COURAGE AWARDS FOR THE ARTS from her at the Modern, to Gil & Lila Silverman and La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela. Each couple will receive a framed handwritten citation by Yoko Ono and 25 thousand dollars.

Ono says:

“Gil & Lila Silverman have been courageously and patiently supporting the Fluxus Movement and other cutting edge art, when they were not widely known in the world.

La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela have never strayed from giving their uniquely creative efforts in Art to the world.

In the age in which Art is rapidly becoming an accomodation to the world of commerce and about to  disappear from its original function of provoking and challenging our society with new and creative ideas, I feel it is most important to appreciate artists and collectors, such as Gil & Lila Silverman, and La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, who are still adhering to a firm stand in nuturing the growth of pure Art.

“I am happy to acknowlege and honour Gil & Lila Silverman and La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela for having spent their lives doing just that: to insist on protecting pure art from it’s evaporation, under very, very trying circumstances.”
