THE WALK OF LIGHT

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence in Iceland:
Commit ▪ Act ▪ Demand:
We CAN End Violence Against Women!
The Global Advocacy Campaign launched by UNIFEM November 2009:
• Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women!
• Special Message from Yoko Ono!
To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, women’s and human rights groups have organized a Walk of Light led by prominent public figures carrying torches and sparklers.
IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is an appeal for Peace – an appeal for a world without violence.
The Walk of Light will start at the National Cultural House at 19:00 and end in front of the sculpture Sungaliot facing IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.
IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will symbolically be turned off at 19:30 to bring attention to gender-based violence: this widespread – but hidden – human rights violation.
At 19:45 IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will be illuminated again to bring gender-based violence to light and at the same time to signify a ray of hope that genuine peace can be achieved for everyone.
Around the world millions of women are the victims of gender-based violence every single day.
Gender-based violence has many faces: female genital mutilation, domestic and sexual violence.
Rape is systematically used as a weapon of war.
In peacetime, gender-based violence continues to persist and as such constitutes a war against women. Thus, genuine peace cannot be achieved until violence against women and girls has been eliminated.
The light of IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is a reminder about what we can do to end violence and contribute to Genuine Peace.
As soon as IMAGINE PEACE TOWER illuminates let’s be mindful of everyone who works toward a World of Peace – a World free from Gender-Based Violence and what we, each and everyone, can do to eliminate violence against women and girls.
Let’s Imagine!
