On New Year’s Eve 2008, a MySpace friend wrote to me
and asked: “What can I do to help the Peace Movement?”
This was my reply:
Dear Jake
This is an age where one hero cannot conquer Evil.
Evil is a dis-ease presented to us as our fate.
Many times, it is presented to us as an illusion of goodness
- so we get confused, don’t free ourselves from it, and become destroyed by it.
To conquer evil, each one of us must first clearly see what it is.
That it is a curable dis-ease.
Then work to release us from its power in a way we can.
Luckily, there are so many of us in the world, it is enough
for all of us to do what we can do with joy
and not feel depressed that we are not doing enough.
We should first IMAGINE PEACE
since we create our destiny by first IMAGINING what destiny
we want for ourselves.
We should ask others to IMAGINE PEACE as well.
You cannot be violent while you are IMAGINING PEACE.
If all of us in the world IMAGINED PEACE at all times,
there will be no time for us to create dis-ease of any kind.
The next thing we should do is to ask to heal the world
by asking your healing power to come out in a big way.
Your intent of healing will start to show it’s power by just asking for it.
Sometimes, you will be healing a situation
which is not near you, so you won’t see it’s effect.
But healing is being done, regardless.
Again, when all of us in the world ask the world to be healed, it will be.
Know that it is that simple.
Because all of us are one.
We affect each other right away.
We affect each other even when we are in fear, confusion, anger,
and wanting to destroy the world and help to increase the dis-ease.
That’s how effective we are.
Start doing what you can do.
The Universe will be affected right away
as you start to think in the right way
to correct the dis-ease in our world.
Start with something small.
Do one nice thing a day.
Call your mom and tell her you are thinking of her.
Look at the tree and admire it’s beauty in words and in action.
Send a message to your friend what you respect about her/him.
Send your message through the internet how you love life and why..well, that’s big!
If you keep doing that for three months you will see the difference in your life.
Be creative.
Do what you can do.
By that, you will be starting the wheels of goodness to turn.
Lots of love,
yoko

Thank you for this inspiration. Inner peace is the first step towards world peace. Since we are all connected on all levels, by following these steps and spreading the word I hope we can experience world peace in our lifetime.
This is sharing in it’s most pure form. The sgaring of peaceful ways and ways to make peace. Imagine if all people picked up this piece of the peace map, and were inspired to seach for the rest of the missing pieces. We could journey into a Utopian world where greed, hatred and all the negative facets of our existance just shrivelled up and disappeared.
Well done Yoko. As always, you shine as a beacon on a hill showing the way.
Long may you long shine on so that we “can all shine on”.
I always believe that peace and love start in the HOME and is spread neighbor to neighbor to neighborhoods then the town and the next town. If we each did something nice at home, helped a neighbor out, however small. it does make the other person feel good. In return that person did something nice, you can’t help but spread the love around and hopefully peace will come following too. Even a simple smile could make a person’s day.
Yoko,
You are amazing. Thank you for writing what I so needed to hear. You are a blessing and an inspiration!
Hi Yoko,
What a great question and what a beautiful answer! I also ask myself what can I do and sometimes I know what to do, and sometimes I am lost, but your answer is so deep and pure. So thanks Jake & Yoko, I will read this letter from you more often so as not to forget what you have said. Thanks for your inspiration Yoko, Franz Baumgartner
Being creative…
If everyone tried to do that they would soon realise they need a peacful world to be creative in. They would also stop regurgitating the same old and birthing new. I hope people will not be discouraged by this economic downturn. I hope they realise that this is their chance to create. To make some more personal things, not to consume what the big corps push their way. Put down the music player and grab an instrument. Learn to fix something, help someone else fix something. Go for a walk not a drive. Love someone.
I think that there should be more, in the context of the struggle for peace and a global community of love that is its antithesis & cure, on the issue of climate chaos (“global warming”). The situation is MUCH more dire that even most progressives working on the issue realize; Jim Hansen, the leading US climatologist on the issue of global warming, has, along with other leading scientists been powerfully demonstrating that we need to not only COMPLETELY eliminate net emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and fast, but actually lower the EXISTING levels in the atmosphere, to an equivalent of 350 parts per million (ppm)CO2. The current level of CO2 alone is already ~387 ppm and rapidly rising. There is a very nonmilitant group called 350.org, already organizing around and trying to publicize this idea.
We should remember that major progressives, not only in Congress but groups like the 1SkyCoalition, are calling for an 80% reduction in GHGs by 2050, a demand that is both much too slow and catastrophically insufficient. World peace really requires that nature not be destroyed, leaving remnants as described by Walt Whitman in the classic poem “Respondez! Respondez!” Yoko Ono is one of the figures who could help the planet reach the next step in having at least a consensus of progressives realize the need to recognize the full urgency of the climate chaos issue, now under-recognized by the mainstream of most progressives, let alone politicians.
I would note that Jim Hansen has gotten coverage on the front page of the Guardian in the UK, but merely has gotten scant attention here, with notable exceptions such as at Huffington Post. Hansen has testified this past year before the US Congress on these issues, which also got little coverage in the US
There are an array of many issues, but often a handful stand out above the rest in their urgency (the immediate urgency of ending the pure slaughter in Gaza as of this writing, Jan 4, 2009, is an example. In making the biggest positive difference possible, Yoko Ono and other concerned major public figures should take a MUCH closer look at climate chaos and the specific urgings of Jim Hansen along with others.
beitiful. absoulutly buetiful. if we all thought like that, the world would be a much better place
Yoko, this campaign is good, and if possible it affects to change many people’s thought. However, many people who has the money and power seems not to want the peace, and we can’t resist this system.
I hope this campaign has the good result and Lennon’s dream come true.
Cloudy, you are spreading government and business lies and properganda and dont even know it. Global warming is just another con job to steal your hard earned income so the rich can get richer. The sun controls the temperature of the earth regardless of what is in the atmostphere. The scientists come up with crap theories so they get research funding. The rich pay them to invent profitable lies.
Hi Yoko, Thank you. your words fill me with hope and confidence. I am a great believer in world peace and i want to contribute to help to make this world a peaceful and loving place to be. If only there were other people like you there could open their ears and minds to accept that this world is a beautiful place and by all this conflict we are distroying the one inportant thing. THE PLANT. It hurts me to switch on the tv and to listen and watch all the pain and suffering that is going on. I feel helpless that i can not help to stop it. But reading your words has given me hope and i know that there are some people who want peace and who are willing to help to change their way of thinking. By thinking these two words. ( IMAGINE PEACE ) I know i am helping in some way. Thank you Yoko. I love you. ( ALL WE NEED IS LOVE LOVE ALL WE NEED IS LOVE.)Sue
Hi Yoko–I’m glad to see the War Is Over project has started again! I started a tribute War is Over project back in the fall, to help promote the international day of peace (peaceoneday.org). I distributed about 500 postcards, 400 flyers, 100+ posters, and who knows how many stickers… in the area around my university and town (with a few friends’ help). I then took some photographs and made them into an artist book. I thought you might like to see these photos:

thank you for being such an inspiration! peace be with us all!
Hi yoko!
what a great idea to promote peace. I love John Lennon’s music and have just
found out that the nursing agency I used to work for took care of his
Aunt Mimi when she was living in Sandbanks in Poole Dorset near where we
live. Peace and love harmony and tranquility may your spirituality inspire
forever.

Yes, collectively, we can have peace. Energy is energy no matter what kind it is. If the energy of Peace is more than not, then we will have Peace. Hate attracts hate, love attracts love and peace attracts peace. When will we ever learn? Why haven’t we all just tried it once as a collective? We have tried everything else. It is so simple to love your brothers and sisters. We are all just a program of our pasts. When we get tired of watching a program on TV, we change the channel. We can do this with love. If we are feeling anything less than love or harmony, we just change or shift into another conciousness. It is so easy. Just try it. It feels good. Thank you.
