 Yoko Ono: Affirmations

Why do people keep laughing at desert island jokes?
That is because, secretively, we are all desert islands.
The desert island joke that I laughed at until there were tears in my eyes (now that’s a tricky one!)
was the one where a guy was waving frantically to a small ship in the distance.
The ship came very near and it was still small.
He picked it up.
It was a toy ship.
How many ships came near me turned out to be toy ships.

– Yoko Ono, This is Not Here Show, Everson Museum, Syracuse, New York, October 1971

I’m waiting for a boat to help me out of here
Waiting for a boat to help me out
The boat that reached my shore was a toyboat
Waiting for a boat to help me out

I’m dreaming of a lake I’ve never seen before
Dreaming of a lake I’ve never seen
The lake I’ve seen last was a picture lake
Dreaming of a lake I’ve never seen

You who are
You who are
Help me out, help me out, help me out of here.

I’m thinking of a castle on top of the hill
Thinking of a castle on top of the hill
The castle I’ve been to was full of flies
Thinking of a castle on top of the hill

You who are
You who are
Help me out, help me out, help me out of here

I wrote this song after John’s passing. Things were very hard for me. I had to survive for me and my son. So one day, I wrote this song, on the white piano John gave me for my birthday. I didn’t write my songs on the white piano so much. So I wonder now, if John was telling me to do this – “ASK FOR HELP, YOKO!” Maybe. I quickly wrote and sung the song hoping that some help would come. What came was more attack than help. But since I am still here, I must have received enough help to have survived. I feel very thankful. love, yoko

It was after the rain. I was looking out from my window. The buildings on the opposite side of the park were shining with a touch of pink in the evening light. There was a faint rainbow hanging in the park right in front of my eyes. I said to myself “Wait a minute, an arch is a segment of a circle and usually it has a support underneath it. Is there a support for a rainbow like the fertile ground that supports the trees? Is there a part of a rainbow we’re not seeing? It could even be that a rainbow is a circle!” Then a tiny voice said to me “Yes, a rainbow is a circle, and more. You are just shown an inkling of a rainbow. Just like the best of you think and communicate in shorthand, things are shown to you in little bits. And you know why?” I heard myself say “Why?” with an exclamation point.
A perfect silence is what came back. Only the park was shimmering in its full glow. The little voice started to whisper to me again, this time in what i call long hand. I kept writing it down as it came to me until it was about a hundred pages, and the sun started to rise from the window. This is its first page. I hope it will be of some use to you.

Bless you for your anger for it is a sign of rising energy.
Direct not to your family, waste not on your enemy.
Transform the energy to versatility and it will bring prosperity

Bless you for your sorrow for it is a sign of vulnerability
Share not with your family, direct not to yourself.
Transform the energy to sympathy and it will bring you love.

Bless you for your greed for it is a sign of great capacity.
Direct not to your family. Direct not to the world.
Transform the energy to giving.
Give as much as you wish to take, and you will receive satisfaction

Bless you for your jealousy for it is a sign of empathy.
Direct not to your family, direct not to your friends.
Transform the energy to admiration and what you admire will become part of your life.

Bless you for your fear. For it is a sign of wisdom.
Do not hold yourself in fear.
Tranform the energy to flexibility and you will be free from what you fear.

Bless you for your poverty for it is a sign of great possibility
do not hold poverty in your mind.
Every drop of your generosity will come back in 10 fold.
Give as though you were a king, and you will receive a king’s due.

Bless you for your search of direction for it is a sign of aspiration.
Transform the energy to receptivity and the direction will come to you

Bless you for the times you see evil.
Evil is energy mishandled and it feeds on your support.
Feed not and it will self-destruct.
Shed light and it will cease to be.

Bless you for the times you feel no love.
Open your heart to life anyway, and in time you will find love in you.

Bless you, bless you, bless you.
Bless you for what you are.
Remember you are loved.
Remember I love you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you
Our planet is healthy and whole
Every part of the planet is revitalized and healed.

We, the people of Earth
See clearly, Hear clearly, Think clearly.
Express and communicate our thoughts clearly
Spiritually, Mentally, and physically.

For the benefit of ours and other planets’
We make the right judgement, right decision, right move
at the right time and the right place
for ourselves and others.

We are now bathing in the light of Dawn
Standing in the Heaven we have created on Earth.
We now wish to share this Age of Joy
With all Lives in the Universe.

We are all one, united with infinite and eternal love.

For the highest good of all concerned, So be it.

Imagine one thousand suns in the
sky at the same time.
Let them shine for one hour.
Then, let them gradually melt
into the sky.
Make one tunafish sandwich and eat.

Bandage any part of your body.
If people ask about it, make a story
and tell.
If people do not ask about it, draw
their attention to it and tell.
If people forget about it, remind
them of it and keep telling.
Do not talk about anything else.

Spinning on Air: Mother & Son: Yoko Ono Lennon & Sean Ono Lennon

Yoko Ono is nothing less than a cultural icon. From her early years in New York’s artistic avant-garde, to her marriage and collaborations with Beatle John Lennon, to her creative activism promoting peace, Ono has made, and continues to make, a powerful impact on our world.

Sean Lennon – Ono and John Lennon’s son born in 1975 – is a creative musician in his own right, and has been performing with and directing his mother’s Plastic Ono Band for years. Spinning On Air host/producer David Garland invited Sean to create a playlist of his mother’s music, and present it with her on Mother’s Day.

In the course of the program, Yoko and Sean tell many interesting stories. They speak intimately about the music, and reminisce about the events that inspired the compositions. Sean reacts to a John Lennon recording he’s hearing for the first time.

The music ranges from the proto-punk intensity of “Why” (1970), which features Ono’s unique, startling vocalizations and John Lennon’s noise guitar, to the gentle “I’m Going Away Smiling” (2009), for which Sean played the lyrical piano accompaniment.

Yoko Ono is nearing her 80th birthday, and going strong.
